From the time he was a small boy, Ken Korb wanted to draw. Intrigued by a contest in a Boy's Life Magazine, ten-year-old Ken gritted his teeth and tried his best to do the drawings to enter the contest: a leprechaun with a pipe, a gold prospector, or a deer. He was determined to figure out how to draw. If a boy showed talent in his drawing, the ad promised drawing lessons. Though Ken never entered the contest, he did learn to draw. He studied books on the subject all through his teenage years; and later, he took courses and workshops. Ken's determination, his discipline, his total immersion in study of art, has carried through to this day.
Ken's family often went camping in the woods by a lake. Ken loves hiking, fishing, and being in nature. He likes to say that he is happiest when his head is in the clouds. Always, he would seek out beautiful landscapes - beaches, forests, rivers and streams, and would draw them and paint them. And of course, he used art in his business: drawing was an important part of designing carpentry, woodwork, cabinetry & interior design, commercial & residential.
The last five years, Ken has concentrated on painting and drawing. Attending workshops with noted painters, in oil, watercolor, and pastel; and reading every book on color and composition he can get his hands on, he has gotten better and better. Mostly, he has learned by doing. He never goes anywhere without a sketchbook. He has perfected his "rig," the apparatus he takes with him to paint in nature, until it has exactly what he needs. He has made storage compartments for wet oil paintings so that they can dry without being disturbed. And he has become very prolific; almost every day he produces a work of art. It is astounding! Plein Air is his favorite type of painting, but he will paint from imagination or from photos from his travels. His use of color and light, and his sense of composition combine to produce beautiful art that is realistic, but not photographic. The subjects vary, but most are of scenic landscape, capturing the drama of light & color. Now he has over 550 works of art, many of them framed and ready for sale. In every piece, he has tried to "capture the joy and beauty of our world."
When asked about what makes a successful painting, Ken says it is important to follow the rules --- rules of perspective, linear and aerial, of color temperature (warm or cool), of light source and shadow. Freedom, he says, lies within the rules, a universe of freedom!!
Feeling the joy of being a plein air artist.
Always skill building to match my inner vision of our beautiful world. I usually add birds that are flying free in timeless flight. most of my drawings & paintings depict the scene as it might have been a hundred or 2oo years ago. The modern world is all around for us to see, along with millions of people everywhere. I paint where man goes & leaves a trail to follow, or a place to blaze a new trail. Please walk, fly or swim right into my world. Ken
